Cleverly too good for Onyango

February 14, 2009

Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly made the second defence of his belt look easy last night, knocking opponent Samson Onyango out in the first round.

The welshman needed just 135 seconds to send Onyango to the canvas after a barrage of body shots, from which the Kenyan failed to make the referee’s count.

It was his third win since leaving Enzo Calzaghe’s stable last year and reamains undefeated in fifteen.

Last night was the first time i’d actually seen Nathan fight and two minutes wasn’t exactly enough time to form an opinion on him, although it’s clear to see he really packs a punch and ha a lot of talent.

British champion Dean Francis is being touted as Cleverly’s next opponent, although he could only manage a draw on the same card last night in Swindon , it would be a great fight to see as Francis’ record of 30 wins from 34 fights speaks for itself.

But if Cleverly can capture the Lonsdale belt it could prove to be a stepping stone onto the international scene.
